Wassa Dance Thanksgiving fundraiser

11/21 Tues. 6:00 pm
How Design Fueled the 23andMe Comeback
Kaiser Permanente Campus
(Capitol Hill)
“We’re excited to have Peilun Shan join us to talk about his work, experiences, and insights as a designer of healthcare products and experiences. Peilun is a multi-disciplinary product designer based in San Francisco. He is currently a Lead User Experience Designer at Verily (a subsidiary of Alphabet focused on life sciences and healthcare). Previous, he led the Product Design team at 23andMe.”

11/21 Tues. 6:30 pm
The Big Meetup: Help Desk
Smart Buildings Center, Pacific Tower
(Beacon Hill)
“Our community is full of members with a broad range of expertise from building sites, to front and back-end development, hosting, strategy, UX and design, SEO and analytics, social networking, to project and business management. Bring your non-technical questions and expertise, too!”

11/23 Thurs. 9:00 am
Wassa Thanks-Giving Dance
Crown Hill Center
(Crown Hill)
Over the past 14 years this has become my favorite way to start Thanksgiving day. “This gathering has become a beloved event for many who enjoy community, fun and good works as part of their holiday traditions. As always the event features some of Seattle’s finest percussionists donating their time for the project. This year we will dance to raise money for the Wassa Inua Mama (Uplift Women) Fund from Common Ground for Africa.”

11/24 Fri. 7:00 pm
Black Friday Party with the Djeliyah Band
Dahlak Eritrean
(Beacon Hill)
“The Djeliyah Band plays a fusion between West African traditional Djeli music and the modern Guinea music within West Africa, which provides a highlife sound for your dancing pleasure!”
#SeattleWorldBeat

11/24 Fri. 9:00 pm
Polyrhythmics
Tractor Tavern
(Ballard)
“Rich with bold brass and hypnotic percussion, the Polyrhythmics tear through a singular blend of funk, soul, psychedelic rock, R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat, calling to mind everything from Antibalas and the Dap-Kings to The Meters and Fela Kuti.”
#SeattleWorldBeat

11/24 Fri. 10:30 pm
Uncle Mike Ruins Christmas (opening night)
Jet City Improv
(U District)
I just created a new category on my personal blog: “Evidence that I am a horrible human being.” As Exhibit A I will note that I have attended way too many of these shows over the years. “This obscene improv comedy show centers on Uncle Mike, a vulgar perverted monstrosity of a man, who twists cheerful Christmas stories into disgusting clusterf*cks. You write down a heartwarming holiday memory. We re-enact it. Then Uncle Mike ruins it.”
#HauteSeattle

11/25 Sat. 7:00 pm
Latino Twist
Seamonster Lounge
(Wallingford)
“Join us for an unforgettable night of salsa, merengue, cumbia, and bachata.”
#SeattleWorldBeat

Next Week

11/28 Tues. 7:00 pm
John Boylan’s Conversation
Vermillion
(Capitol Hill)
“As part of our thinking about change, this time we’re looking at new skins, the ways in which we skin ourselves, and how that relates to fashion, architecture, art, and especially technological change.”
#SEATalks

11/29 Wed. 6:30 pm
The Evergrey Turns One!
The Riveter
(Capitol Hill)
“The Evergrey is now officially one year old! We’re had an amazing time getting to know this brilliant, changing city with all of you, and we’re partnering with some great local artists, makers, and organizations to showcase the community that makes Seattle home.”
#Community

11/29 Wed. 7:30 pm
The Big One: Cascadia’s Megaquake
Phinney Center
(Phinney Ridge)
“As residents of the Pacific Northwest, we are all familiar with stories of Seattle’s vulnerability to seismic activity. And we certainly recall the haunting 2015 New Yorker article asserting that our region is long-overdue for ‘the big one.’ To help contextualize these fears and delve into the science beneath the threat of earthquakes, Town Hall presents Dr. John Vidale — seismologist at UW’s College of the Environment and leader for several years of UW’s M9 Project.”
#Science!

11/30 Thurs. 8:00 pm
A John Waters Christmas
The Neptune
(U District)
“Like a damaged St. Nick for the Christmas corrupted, John Waters – legendary filmmaker (‘Female Trouble’, ‘Hairspray’, ‘Serial Mom’), raconteur and author of bestselling books, Carsick, Role Models and Make Trouble – hitchhikes into town with a bag full of sticks and stones for the devoted and the damned, spreading Yuletide profanity and perverted piety with this critically acclaimed one-man show.”
#HauteSeattle

12/1 Fri. 6:00 pm
Seattle Quantified Self Show + Tell
Institute for Systems Biology
(South Lake Union)
Personal metrics enthusiasts gather to share their n=1 findings. “Let us know if you want to present: What did you do, how did you do it, and what did you learn.”
#SEATalks

12/1 Fri. 6:00 pm
Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition
Westlake Center
(Downtown)
“Join us for one of Seattle’s most magical and festive nights. This heart-warming tradition attracts nearly 10,000 people every year to enjoy holiday music. Figgy helps. The event raises funds for the Pike Market Senior Center & Food Bank which offer free meals, free groceries, one-on-one counseling and other services to our low-income and homeless neighbors in need. Immerse yourself in the holiday spirit as dozens of caroling teams sing their hearts out on downtown Seattle street corners in and around Westlake Center.”
